Coleus forskohlii is a dietary supplement containing Coleus forskohlii standardised to 10% forskolin. Used for thousands of years by Hindus in Ayurvedic medicine, it plays a role in facilitating weight control by helping to increase lipolysis.
Coleus forskohlii contains a diterpene called forskolin, which has a direct action on an enzyme involved in lipolysis called adenylate cyclase (1-2). This enzyme promotes the breakdown of fats stored in adipose cells, and as a result, contributes over the long term to weight loss (3).
Lipolysis is the physiological mechanism that breaks down fats in order to convert them into energy. There are two types: gastrointestinal lipolysis, which takes place during digestion, and adipocyte lipolysis which affects stored fats.
It is the second type which allows us to ‘lose weight’. When the body needs energy and cannot directly obtain it from the diet – following exercise or when fasting, for example – it triggers this process which results in triglycerides in fat cells being broken down and energy being released. When this is repeated, one manifestation is mechanical weight loss, and in particular, fat loss.
This process can be positively influenced by a number of substances which increase its efficacy or expand its reach. Forskolin is one such substance.
We recommend taking one or two capsules a day, with meals, for example.
During the supplementation period, it is a good idea to follow these additional steps aimed at promoting the breakdown of stored fat in adipose tissue:
This product’s capsules are made of pullulan, a natural polysaccharide obtained by fermenting tapioca or corn. Pullulan contains no animal ingredients and provides an excellent barrier to oxygen, helping to preserve the integrity of the capsule’s ingredients. It is also an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials.
