Health benefits of Berberis aristata berberine

What exactly is berberine ?

Berberine is an alkaloid derived from isoquinoline.

It is produced naturally by certain plants such as Indian barberry (Berberis aristata or daruharidra in Ayurveda), as well as common barberry (Berberis vulgaris), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Chinese goldthread (Coptis chinensis), etc.

Berberine is particularly highly-valued in the Asian pharmacopoeia.

Benefits of berberine on blood sugar, cholesterol, etc.

The many scientific studies conducted on the health benefits of berberine have found this alkaloid to help:

  • regulate blood sugar levels by promoting glucose breakdown and insulin sensitivity, and by reducing glucose production by the liver, mainly through activation of AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase). Berberine has also been tested many times in diabetics with promising results (1-4);
  • regulate cholesterol levels by inhibiting its absorption in the gut and release into the bloodstream, and by increasing the capture of LDL cholesterol (‘bad’ cholesterol) by the liver (5-9). Berberine also helps to restore a good overall lipid profile by helping to maintain normal triglyceride levels and optimising ‘good’ HDL cholesterol levels;
  • berberine is also being studied for its potential antimicrobial properties. It’s thought to work by disrupting the structure of microorganisms’ cell membranes and inhibiting their synthesis of DNA and proteins, which would reduce their growth and proliferation (10-13);
  • last but not least, it is often attributed with positive effects on longevity. These effects are thought to be due to its ability to activate the AMPK enzyme , which improves cellular metabolism, reduces oxidative stress and increases autophagy (the body’s cellular recycling system), thus supporting better cellular health and a longer lifespan (14-15).

The 4 key strengths of our ultra-bioavailable berberine

The supplement Berberine Max Bioactivity is notable in 4 key aspects:

  1. its exceptional bioavailability: Berberine Max Bioactivity is 10 times more bioavailable than standard berberine supplements. Usually, raw extract of berberine offers only partial oral bioavailability and bioabsorption. The exceptionally high bioavailability provided by Berbevis™ is the result of a state-of-the-art delivery system called Indena Phytosome™, specifically designed with berberine’s characteristics in mind. Indena Phytosome™ uses pea protein as a carrier, raw extract of Berberis aristata which is more soluble than pure berberine, and grape seed extract, a natural antioxidant which protects the gut mucosa from any adverse gastrointestinal side effects caused by the berberine, thus increasing its tolerability (16);
  2. its patented and scientifically-supported ingredient: Berbevis™ is a patented, recognised ingredient, the effects of which have been proven by clinical research and bioabsorption studies. Its superior efficacy compared with that of other berberine optimisation technologies has also been established (17-18);
  3. its powerful dose: Berberine Max Bioactivity offers an excellent daily dose of 1100 mg of Berbevis™ extract (an optimal 310mg of berberine a day) for maximum efficacy, in complete safety;
  4. its natural format: Berberine Max Bioactivity comes in the form of vegetarian capsules, with just one, 100% natural excipient: acacia gum.

Any questions?

Are there any side effects associated with berberine?

In rare cases, berberine may cause mild gastrointestinal problems, headaches, low blood pressure or low blood sugar.

Berberine may also interact with certain drugs including diabetes medication. Those suffering from diabetes and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should seek medical advice before starting supplementation.

Does berberine make you lose weight?

Some studies suggest that berberine promotes weight loss by improving insulin sensitivity, increasing metabolic activity and modulating the gut microbiota (19-21).

Weight was actually one of the parameters tested in several clinical studies on the ingredient Berbevis™. According to one such study, after 60 days’ supplementation with Berbevis™, there were reductions of 3% in subjects’ BMI, 7% in fat mass, 3% and 2% in their waist and hip circumference respectively, and an average 22% in their visceral adipose tissue (22).

For optimal weight loss results, berberine supplementation should be combined with a varied, balanced diet and regular exercise.

Berberis aristata vs Berberis vulgaris: how do the two plants differ?

While Berberis aristata and Berberis vulgaris are part of the same Berberidaceae plant family, the first comes mainly from the Himalayas and Nepal, and the second from Europe, North Africa and temperate Asia.

Both plants contain berberine and have the same effects on blood sugar and the lipid profile.

Which supplements can be taken in synergy with berberine from Berberis aristata?

Alongside supplementation with Berberine Max Bioactivity, you can take trivalent chromium (Cr3+), the form of chromium found in food and which helps maintain normal blood sugar levels. For maximum efficacy, opt for trivalent chromium combined with Phyllanthus emblica and purified shilajit (as offered by the formulation Crominex™ 3+).

In terms of improving your lipid profile and cardiovascular health, make sure you have a good intake of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Both help to maintain normal triglyceride levels. Choose a pure omega-3 supplement with a low rate of oxidation (such as Super Omega 3).

In tandem with your highly-bioactive berberine supplement, you can also benefit from the probiotic species Lactobacillus reuteri, which has been studied for its potential effects on metabolic health. For optimum efficacy, choose a high-dose probiotic delivered in gastro-resistant capsules (such as Lactobacillus Reuteri).
