The supplement Butyrate Colon Formula contains stabilised butyrate (in the form of tributyrin) and other synergistic active ingredients beneficial for intestinal health.
It is a valuable aid for individuals suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic condition marked by abdominal pain, bloating and problems with transit such as diarrhoea and constipation.
Butyrate Colon Formula is part of our gastrointestinal health product category.
What benefits are offered by our butyrate supplement?
Definition of butyrate
Butyrate is a metabolite that occurs naturally in the body at varying levels depending on the individual.
This short-chain fatty acid, produced primarily by the gut microbiota via fermentation of dietary fibre, plays a key role in intestinal health:
- it strengthens the intestinal barrier by tightening the junctions between cells, which helps reduce leakage (excessive intestinal permeability) and infections;
- it nourishes and regenerates epithelial cells which form the intestinal wall, ensuring better nutrient absorption;
- and it helps to regulate immunity, pro-inflammatory cytokines and microbiota balance, which reduces inflammation in the gut.
Production of butyrate by the body is often much lower in the presence of IBS or a depleted microbiota.
Composition and benefits for IBS
Our butyrate supplement contains 4 exceptional ingredients highlighted in the latest scientific research into the management of IBS:
- the tributyrin complex ButyraGen®: ButyraGen® is a patented complex standardised to 50% tributyrin, a stabilised, highly-bioavailable and particularly effective form of butyrate. The benefits of tributyrin have been investigated in a large-scale clinical study involving 3000 subjects suffering from IBS, each of whom was given 150mg of tributyrin twice a day for 12 weeks. Researchers observed a statistically-significant reduction in the severity of abdominal pain. In addition, tributyrin appeared to produce a significant decrease in flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, urgency of bowel movements, nausea and vomiting. 93.90% of those tested expressed the wish to continue supplementing and 88.9% said they would recommend it to other IBS-sufferers (1);
- MicrobiomeX® : this patented extract of orange (Citrus sinensis) and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is standardised in flavonoids (84% hesperidin and 5% naringin), powerful plant compounds from the polyphenol family. Two randomised, double-blind clinical studies suggest that taking MicrobiomeX® regulates the microbiota, significantly increases butyrate production and reduces intestinal inflammation, a common IBS symptom (2);
- a turmeric extract: turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a medicinal plant and spice native to South Asia, the most active ingredient of which is called curcumin. A meta-analysis based on three randomised, controlled trials shows that curcumin promotes digestive well-being, soothes inflammation and improves quality of life in IBS-sufferers. Its benefits are due to unique antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as an ability to modulate the gut microbiota. Curcumin is also safe and well-tolerated, with no adverse effects reported in the various trials (3);
- essential oil of peppermint: peppermint (Mentha piperita) is an aromatic hybrid plant with a fresh, pungent taste. A systematic review and meta-analysis has confirmed its ability to prevent digestive discomfort, and significantly reduce abdominal spasms and other symptoms of IBS (intestinal inflammation, flatulence, indigestion, etc.), compared with a placebo (4).
The three key strengths of our butyrate supplement for IBS
Butyrate Colon Formula is notable for 3 key strengths:
- innovative and unique synergy: Butyrate Colon Formula offers an exceptional combination of powerful active ingredients based on the latest scientific research (including an outstanding form of butyrate – tributyrin). The main ingredients of this supplement are also patented. This synergy of truly effective ingredients is unrivalled in the IBS supplement market;
- clinically-tested ingredients: its ingredients have been tested or analysed in clinical studies and meta-analyses specific to IBS, with clear, quantified, and significant results;
- gastro-resistant capsules: the ingredients are delivered in capsules resistant to stomach acidity, ensuring optimal protection as far as the gut, and thus increased efficacy.
